LAYLA’S STORY

A Cycle Of His Own

Veteran, Marty Smith, pedals with commitment

Marty Smith served over 20 years in the armed forces and was adjusting to life after a stroke when he came to the National Ability Center to use our adaptive cycling equipment.
During his time here, the Department of Veterans Affairs informed Marty that if he logged enough hours on our recumbent bikes to show a commitment to using the equipment, the VA would cover the cost of purchasing a bike. Marty and his wife spent their summer weekends renting a recumbent bike with the National Ability Center and cycled together to reach that goal. Marty is loving having an adaptive cycle of his own, and he and his wife continue to cycle together on a regular basis.
Learn more about and support recreational programs for veterans and military-related individuals like Marty and his wife at our Saluting Our Heroes Luncheon November 13. This powerful afternoon of speakers like Governor Gary Herbert and David W. Checketts pays tribute to the brave men and women who sacrifice and serve our country in the face of conflicts around the globe.
